Why I Wouldn’t Just “Go With the Flow” for Birth Again

When I was pregnant with my first baby, I remember saying: “I've got my birth plan, but I’m just going to go with the flow and see what happens.”

It felt like the right approach at the time.

I didn’t want to overthink things.

I didn’t want to be too rigid.

I trusted that everything would just…happen.

And for many women, this feels like a calm and positive mindset.

But looking back now, I realise something important: I wasn’t going with the flow - I just didn’t fully understand what my options were.

What “Going With the Flow” Really Meant for Me

Looking back now, for me, going with the flow meant:

• Not fully understanding how birth works

• Not feeling confident asking questions

• Agreeing to things I wasn’t always sure about

• Feeling like decisions were happening to me, rather than with me

My birth didn’t go the way I had imagined.

And afterwards, I was left feeling like I hadn’t quite been part of the process in the way I wish I had.

The Difference Second Time Around

When I became pregnant with my second baby, I knew I wanted things to feel different.

Not “perfect”.

Not controlled.

Just… different.

So I prepared differently.

I took the time to understand:

• The physiology of birth

• How my body works during labour

• What my options were

• How to ask questions and make decisions

And the shift in how I felt was huge! I felt calmer. More confident. More involved.

And my experience of birth reflected that.

Preparation Isn’t About Control

This is the part that’s often misunderstood. Preparing for birth isn’t about controlling every outcome. Birth is unpredictable.

But preparation gives you:

• Understanding

• Confidence

• The ability to make informed decisions

• A sense of calm, even when things change

It allows you to adapt - without feeling lost.

Knowledge Changes How You Experience Birth

When you understand what’s happening in your body, things feel less overwhelming.

You’re not just being told what’s happening - you understand why.

You feel more able to:

• Ask questions

• Take a moment

• Consider your options

• Stay connected to what feels right for you

And that changes everything!

You Can Still Be Flexible

Preparing for birth doesn’t mean having a rigid plan.

You can still be flexible.

You can still be open.

But instead of “going with the flow” blindly, you’re moving with awareness.

There’s a big difference.

A Final Thought

If you’re pregnant and thinking: “I’ll just go with the flow…” I completely understand.

I was there too.

But you deserve more than just hoping things go well.

You deserve to feel informed.

To feel involved.

To feel confident in your decisions.
